About this tour

The Maderas volcano, lower and greener than its neighbour Concepción, offers a different but equally fascinating hiking experience. Rising to 1,394 metres, Maderas is an extinct volcano covered in dense rainforest. The volcano is known for its rich biodiversity, hidden waterfalls and, above all, the mystical lagoon nestling in its crater.

The hike to the summit of Maderas usually starts from the town of Balgüe or Mérida. Unlike the ascent of Concepción, this one is less physically demanding, but the path is often muddy and slippery, especially after the rains, which can make the climb difficult. The route passes through primary and secondary forests, where you can observe some impressive flora and fauna. Howler monkeys and capuchin monkeys roam the trees, while colourful tropical birds fly overhead.

Halfway up, you can make a diversion to the San Ramón waterfall, over 60 metres high and ideal for a refreshing break. As you continue to climb, the path becomes narrower and steeper, but the final reward is a breathtaking view of the crater lagoon. This small lagoon is surrounded by dense vegetation, and the atmosphere is often misty, creating a mysterious and soothing ambience. You can even swim in the cool waters of the lagoon, although they are often muddy.

The descent is just as beautiful, offering views of the surrounding valleys and Lake Nicaragua. Although this hike is less well known than the Concepción, it is just as rewarding, especially for those looking to connect with nature and explore a lush rainforest.
