About this tour

León Cathedral, also known as the Basilica-Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is one of Nicaragua’s most emblematic and historic monuments. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011, this cathedral is the largest in Central America and is an architectural masterpiece combining Baroque and Neoclassical styles.

As you enter the cathedral, you will be immediately impressed by the immensity and grandeur of its interior. The high vaulted ceilings, majestic columns and richly decorated altars create an atmosphere of serenity and devotion. The soft light filtering through the colourful stained glass windows subtly illuminates the space, highlighting the many works of art and religious sculptures that adorn the walls and side chapels.

One of the highlights of the visit is undoubtedly the access to the roof of the cathedral. For a small fee, you can climb a narrow staircase to the top of the building, where you’ll be greeted by a breathtaking panorama of the city of León and its surroundings. The roof itself is a work of art, painted entirely in brilliant white, with elegantly designed domes and bell towers. Strolling across this immaculate terrace, you can admire the architectural details up close while enjoying panoramic views of the city’s colourful rooftops, the surrounding mountains and the chain of volcanoes, including the famous Cerro Negro.

A visit to the roof is particularly recommended early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the intense heat and enjoy the spectacular play of light. Don’t forget to take off your shoes or wear special slippers to keep the roof clean and intact. This experience also offers wonderful photographic opportunities, capturing the beauty and history of León from a unique angle.

The cathedral also houses the tomb of Rubén Darío, Nicaragua’s most famous poet and a major figure in Hispanic literature. His tomb, adorned with a marble lion sculpture, is a place of pilgrimage for lovers of poetry and culture.

A visit to León Cathedral is a deep dive into Nicaraguan history, culture and spirituality, offering an enriching and memorable experience for all visitors.

The Museum of the Revolution, located in the heart of León, is a must for understanding Nicaragua’s political and social history. Housed in a historic building that once housed the Palace of Communications, the museum offers a deep and moving insight into the revolutionary struggle that marked the country in the 20th century, in particular the Sandinista revolution that overthrew the Somoza dictatorship in 1979.

As you enter the museum, you will be greeted by former revolutionary fighters who act as guides, sharing their personal experiences with passion and authenticity. These guides bring a human and living dimension to the story, recounting anecdotes, sacrifices and victories that are not to be found in the history books. Their personal involvement in the events described adds emotional depth and a unique perspective to the visit.

The museum itself is made up of several rooms displaying historical photographs, documents, newspaper articles, weapons and personal objects that belonged to the revolutionaries. The exhibits trace the history of the revolution from its origins, through the fierce fighting, to the establishment of the new government.

One of the most poignant parts of the visit is the section dedicated to the martyrs of the revolution, paying tribute to those who lost their lives in the struggle for freedom and social justice. The personal stories and testimonies presented here offer a deeper understanding of the human cost of the revolution and the Nicaraguan people’s commitment to their sovereignty and rights.

At the end of the tour, the guides often invite you to climb to the roof of the building, from where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city of León, including views of the roofs of the colonial churches and the surrounding volcanoes. This vantage point offers an opportunity to reflect on the history you have just discovered while admiring the architectural and natural beauty of the area.

The Museum of the Revolution is more than just an exhibition space; it is a place of memory and living testimony that allows visitors to connect in a deep and personal way with the history of Nicaragua. This educational and moving experience will enrich your understanding of the country and its people, leaving a lasting impression long after your visit.
