The Charco Verde nature reserve is a must-see for those wishing to discover Ometepe’s unique biodiversity without the extreme physical exertion of volcanic trekking. Situated between the island’s two volcanoes, Charco Verde is a sanctuary for local flora and fauna, with easy hiking trails, a peaceful lagoon and a black sand beach.
Charco Verde is renowned for its local legends, including that of Chico Largo, a mythical figure who is believed to haunt the lagoon. Surrounded by dense vegetation, the lagoon is a place of absolute serenity. Walking around the lagoon, you can observe a wide variety of bird species, iguanas and even monkeys. The reserve’s well-maintained paths offer magnificent views of the Concepción volcano, Lake Nicaragua and the surrounding forest.
One of Charco Verde’s main attractions is Punta Jesús María beach, a sandbank that extends into Lake Nicaragua. This beach is an ideal place to relax, swim or simply enjoy the sunset over the lake. The waters here are calm, and the surrounding landscape, with the Concepción volcano in the background, is simply breathtaking.
As well as hiking and relaxing, Charco Verde offers opportunities for eco-tourism. Guided tours are available to learn more about local conservation efforts, the island’s biodiversity, and the legends surrounding the reserve. Charco Verde is a place of contemplation and discovery, perfect for nature lovers and those looking to recharge their batteries in complete tranquillity.
