The Isletas de Granada are an archipelago of more than 360 small islands on Lake Nicaragua, just a few kilometres from Granada city centre. Formed by a volcanic eruption thousands of years ago, these islands are now a paradise for lovers of nature, tranquillity and picturesque scenery. The best way to explore these islands is on a boat cruise, an experience that combines relaxation, discovery and adventure.
Cruises to the Isletas usually depart from the port of Granada, and the duration of the visit can vary from one to three hours, depending on the itinerary chosen. As you sail between the islands, you’ll be able to observe a wide variety of flora and fauna. Tropical birds are abundant, with species such as kingfishers, egrets and cormorants populating the trees and shores. It’s not uncommon to see howler monkeys swinging from branch to branch on some of the more forested islands.
Some islands are inhabited, with luxurious private homes, boutique hotels and even restaurants where you can stop for a meal or refreshment. Others are completely wild, covered in dense vegetation and offering a peaceful haven for local wildlife. Among the popular points of interest, the island of San Pablo is particularly notable for its small fortress, built to defend Granada from pirates in the 18th century.
One of the best-known islands is Zapatera, home to an archaeological site with pre-Columbian sculptures. Although not all cruises stop here, some longer tours include a visit to this fascinating island. Finally, some cruises include stops for a swim in the calm waters of the lake, which is particularly pleasant on a hot day.
A cruise around the Isletas is a relaxing and rewarding way to discover a unique aspect of Granada’s natural heritage. Whether you’re a nature lover, history buff or simply looking for a moment of peace and quiet, this excursion offers a great escape in an idyllic setting.
